many popular nutritional habits are giving
way to new healthier eating ones,
which aimed at cutting down
on the high rate of heart disease and some kinds
of cancer in Britain.A report,
produced by the British Ministry of Health says
that factory-made foods as baked
beans and grilled fish, for example, can be
less harmful and less
fattening than lamb chops or beef steak. Red meat, in fact,
is no longer considered an essential
part of the daily diet .Protein in the form of
fish or poultry, both lower in fat
and calories than meat, is preferable. High fibre
foods such as peas,beans,potatoes and
bread are also held to play
an important part in healthy eating.
And smaller meals are recommended
as a vital contribution in the battle
against obesity. The report recommends
that we eat more fibre, fruit
and vegetables, but especially less fat, sugar
and salt. The rate of heart disease in
Britain is currently among the highest
in the western world and much of it is due to
much fat intake in our diet.
But the report emphasises that being
in good health goes with altering our diet.
Revised eating habits should be part
of an overall change in lifestyle including
more exercise, less alcohol and
smoking.

The United Nations has reported that great progress is being made in the fight against malaria in Africa.
The
UNICEF website says the area that is making the most dramatic improvement is
sub-Saharan Africa.
This
is the region hardest hit by the disease. One of the biggest reasons for these
gains against the killer infection is the increased use of special insect
nets. This simple solution can reduce child deaths by as
much as 20 percent. The report says the number of children using the
insecticide-treated nets has
tripled
since 2000. UNICEF’s Executive Director Ann Veneman said: “Controlling malaria
is vital to
improving
child health and economic development in affected countries…Studies show that
malaria

affects the poorest people in these countries, and…contributes to their [poorer

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
|
1. Language is a way to communicate with each other. We started to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they don't have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their ethnic identity and, even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good.
2. I think most immigrants are trying to preserve their native language in their new country, but this doesn't
help very much in getting a good job. My aunt didn't teach Korean to her children in order to help them succeed in the U.S.; she did so, hopefully, to help them establish a Korean identity. Though the second generation is born in the new country, they often get confused about their identity because they look different from others, and also, if they visit their parent's country, they will probably feel different from other people there, too. My cousins told me that when they visited Korea a few years ago, they felt different from other Koreans. They could even feel it just strolling around the street because they wore different clothes and walked differently.
3. We must realize that language is crucial for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort not to be ignored by their children and to make their children understand their heritage by teaching them the parents' language. This is very important, not only for the harmony of the family, but also in helping the second generation establish their identity.

:*TEXT(4) AIR POLLUTION
|
In most of our cities,
the air is becoming dangerously
full of carbon
monoxide and hydrocarbon. These
substances are increasing
threats to everyone’s
health. To reduce
the amount of monoxide and
hydrocarbon,
environmental protection groups
in the US have
proposed ways of limiting the use
of automobiles. One
way would be to make people use buses, trains, subway and other forms of mass
transportation rather than private cars for much of their travel. It has been
proposed that people be prevented from driving into the central business areas at
least one day a week. It has also been proposed that cars be prevented from
parking on certain streets in the city.
Here are some letters from newspaper readers, each expressing the writer’s opinion of these proposals.
Just think what would happen in this city if on any Monday at 8 am, everyone who usually drives a car decided to use mass transportation and appeared on the nearest street corner; I think the city would have to provide almost 4.000 additional passenger buses to carry these people to their jobs.
Patrick J. Kelly:
Trucks, buses and airplanes are worse polluters than the average well-kept automobile. But the individual car owner has no power to protect himself against government control. Unlike the airplanes and truck and bus companies, the motorist has no influence, so once again the individual cannot defend his rights against government control.
Joseph E. Barnes
What can we do to reduce air pollution? For one thing, we can forget our love affair with the automobile and find other means of transportation which may not be quite as convenient as the auto but would be less expensive and less harmful to the environment. We may learn to like once we try it. It may encourage the development of more satisfactory high-speed mass transportation systems, too. Besides, consider the benefit to your nerves. You’ll avoid fighting rush-hour traffic and you’ll have more time to read the newspaper while letting the bus driver worry about taking you home safely. And think of the many interesting people you’ll see and meet on the way.
Edward D. Riis

Over the past 21
months,Darfour( IN Sudan) has been the scene of horrific human rights
violations by government forces and allied militia .A million and a half people
have been displaced in Darfur. They have been attacked, women raped villages
burnt and looted. Despite the people’s cries for help, they still remain
unprotected and denied justice.
Victims who speak out face harassment and intimidation at the hands of the government security forces. People of Darfur, including internally displaced persons and town-dwellers, human right defenders and lawyers are routine victims of arbitrary powers of arrest and detention. These powers conferred upon the security forces, apparently designed to protect the country, are instead used to torture the population with impunity.
The legal system is in need of extensive reforms. It is weak and unable to hold the government forces and allied militia accountable for massive violations of international law.
Investigations into human rights violations committed in Darfur are either deeply flawed or simply non-existent.
Governments must not accept the endless routine of human rights violations in SUDAN. Mediators of the Sudan and Darfur peace talks must discuss amendments to the emergency laws and ensure that the millions of victims of grave abuses obtain justice.

At
the end of the millennium a lot of importance was given to the campaign against
child labour. The last time there was hope for change was at the turn of the
last century, during the campaign to get US children out of factories.
Brasil, the South America’s largest, richest and most heavily populated country, exports everything from shoes to orange juice to the U.S.A,its largest market.Yet,for all its riches, Brazil also has enormous problems;76% of the population lives in urban areas. in the countryside millions of workers work as day labourers. Among them are badly-paid children under 14 who work illegally.
Parliament members denounced Nike’s involvement with child labour, and asked the Brazilian government to cancel the sponsorship contract signed with that company. It means that the Brazilian soccer team wouldn’t use Nike’s symbol on theirT-shirt or any other Sports material until the company stopped the exploitation of children .According to the International labour Organization, there are 250 million working children around the world.3.8 of them are from Brazil.
Brazil has been working with UNICEF and the International labour Organization to eradicate child labour, which has become a national issue. The Municipal child foundation programme is designed for children working on sugar-cane plantations under hazardous conditions, or for those about to start working in such .The project has managed to enrol 330 children in public schools, provides them with additional educational activities and food, and helped transport them to the local public health posts for medical and dental care’s a result of the project, employers began banning children from their fields.

A WINDOW ON THE WORLD
|
Visit any British town or city that attracts tourists
from late spring to the end of the summer, and you're pretty much guaranteed to
be mown down by a group of excitable foreign students over here to learn
English. Language schools run courses all year round, but the summer months are
traditionally their busiest. All those students have to live somewhere, of
course, and a placement with a local family is the best way
for them to develop their language skills.
2. "The children gain a lot from the experience", says Mandy Winder of Brighton. She and her husband Michael have taken students from the local educational institutes for the past 12 years. "I have bought my children a globe, and the first thing Emily, 10, and Megan, 7, do when a new student arrives is to find out where he or she comes from."
3. The practical side of taking in a student is simple. Basics required are a reasonably sized furnished room with a desk and chair and use of a bathroom. Mandy certainly tries to make her guests feel part of her family. "We all eat together -that's when most of the talking gets done- and I try to make them feel at home. I ask them to tell me what foods they like and don't like." In return for their hospitality, the host family receives about £70 to £80 per week.
4. Introducing a stranger into family life can cause a few problems. There are a few complaints. Mandy said that a few years ago she was watching a television programme when the foreign student picked up the remote control and switched over without asking. She remembers Japanese girls who came with strict guidelines not to talk to men. "They would chat to me, but hardly talk to my husband". Another drawback of taking in students comes when they leave. "If they've been with us for a long time, the children can find it hard when they go", says Mandy.
5. So, is playing the host a worthwhile experience ? In general, yes, especially if you have a big house with rooms to escape to. You have to be relaxed to do it —there are a lot of people who wouldn't want someone else in their home. Mandy Winder agrees : "The children have benefited from it enormously. They've learnt how to live with other people and they're very aware that we're not the only people in the world. Educationally, their geography has improved and they've had a bit of a head start by hearing other languages being spoken."

EDUCATION PROCESS
|
What
happens at school is only one part of the education process. As a matter of
fact, parents have to play a vital role in determining children’s success at
school. There are certain things that are not fundamentally a teacher’s
responsibility; these must be taught at home. For
example, to value education, children should see their parents sit down and
study something from time to time. Parents should also have books and set of
encyclopaedias in the house to show their children how to get answers and
obtain information. In the case parents are unable to afford books; they should
take their children to the library and teach them how to work in it.
We have to remember that a home that places no value on education is like a
worn-out piece of land where nothing flourishes or grows. The other important
thing that parents must do is teach their children to respect authority. Lack
of order and discipline are sometimes the major problems in classrooms. We,
adults, must be more careful and demonstrate to our children that we must abide
by laws and regulations and respect authority. If children hear their parents
criticizing and ridiculing authority, then they will automatically lose respect
for their teachers. Parents must teach their children to be honest and
responsible. They must encourage their children to do their homework alone,
because there are valuable lessons in having a student complete assignment on
his/her own away from the classroom. So when parents sign notes to justify why
their children were absent, or why they didn’t do their homework, although they
know it’s a lie; they effectively work together with the child against the
school. The note may be of help for a moment but what has it done to the
child’s value? Parents and teachers must work together to instil right values
in children.

strain originated in Asia two years ago, where 61 people died in China, Vietnam
and Thailand. Migratory birds have since carried the virus west to Siberia,
Russia, where it killed 11,000 birds and prompted vets to slaughter
127,000 others in an attempt to halt its spread. Russian officials have alerted
Western European nations that the deadly H5N1 strain is on its way. Countries
are now scrambling to shore up their defenses against any outbreaks among their
poultry populations. Holland has ordered all chicken farmers to keep their
birds indoors as a precautionary measure.
Dr. Evgueny Nepoklonov from Russia’s Department of Agriculture has appealed for international financial help to prevent the virus from threatening human life. He said in a news conference: “This isn’t a problem of a single state…it is a problem of all mankind that must be studied together and that needs consolidated and well-coordinated activity.” Time is of the essence in expediting measures to fight against the virus. Experts believe thousands of flocks of infected birds will migrate to Western Europe in mid-September and then to North America. The World Health Organization has voiced concerns that the virus might mutate and spread among humans, which could potentially kill millions.

COMPREHENSION:TEXT(10)AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

Amnesty
International is a worldwide volunteer organization funded entirely by
subscriptions and donations. It is totally independent of any government,
political faction, ideology, economic interest or religious creed.
The organization works for the release of ‘Prisoners of Conscience’ – men, women and children imprisoned anywhere for their beliefs, colour, sex, ethnic origin, language or religion. It also seeks fair and immediate trial for all political prisoners detained without charge, and opposes torture and the degrading treatment of prisoners. It is also against the death penalty for all types of crimes.
Amnesty works by collecting information. When it has proof that a person is a ‘Prisoner of Conscience’, that person’s case is handed over to a local group. The local groups are ordinary individuals who believe in Amnesty’s work. They send letters to governments, embassies, leading newspapers and the prisoner’s family and friends. They also collect signatures and raise money to send medicine, food and clothing to the prisoners and their families. These volunteers use their freedom of speech to win the same freedom for their adopted prisoner.
P aradoxically, Amnesty International is an organization that will only be satisfied when it has become redundant.

COMPREHENSION :TEXT(11) SCHOOL GRADES
TEXTS

Read the passages below carefully.
Then choose the best answer for each of the four questions that follow.
The following are letters to the editor of a school newspaper.
Letter (1)
Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. However, the regimentation resulting from grades still exists. Grades often stifle creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades impose an arbitrary standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be abolished immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.
Magdalena Smith, President,Drama Club
Letter (2)
Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a reprimand to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure student achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.
Simon Harper, Member,Science Club
1. Simon Harper writes from the viewpoint of someone who
(a) wants business to hire more students
(b) believes in the benefits of good grades
(c) is concerned about students' creativity
(d) supports students' interests and abilities
(e) doesn't work too hard at his studies
2. Magdalena Smith thinks it is important for
(a) students to get good jobs
(b) students to participate in music, dramatics, and sports
(c) students to compete more for grades
(d) educators to have more control over grades
(e) students to be reprimanded for not working hard
3. Which of the following states a fact about grades at Village High School?
(a) They are not useful
(b) They stifle creativity
(c) They foster unnecessary competition
(d) They should be optional
(e) They are currently in use
4.Which of the following is NOT an opinion expressed by Magdalena Smith?
(a) Grades should be abolished.
(b) Regimentation results from grades.
(c) Grades impose arbitrary standards of success.
(d) Students should be able to learn without worrying about grades.
(e) Competition may discourage students from pursuing subjects such as drama and art.
COMPREHENSION :*TEXT(12) UNEMPLOYMENT
|
High unemployment has become one of the greatest problems
in most countries nowadays. In western Europe, more than twenty million workers
are jobless and nearly half of them have been out of work for more than a year.
In the U.S.A, about nine million people are unemployed and the economy doesn’t
seem to recover. For the first time, millions of workers have part-time jobs
that they may lose at anytime and in which they have no social guarantees such
as health and retirement benefits.
The rise in unemployment is partly due to the economic crisis. Because of competition with Japan and other Asian countries which produce better quality products at a minimum cost , Thousands of factories in America and Europe have been forced to close or to reduce the number of their workers. On the other hand, millions of unemployed people can’t find a job because the work they did is now unnecessary or has been made easier by machines : farming, mining, automobile assembly and banking rely more and more on robots and computers.
To fight unemployment, people have to adapt to a fast changing job market. More importance is now given to information, education and knowledge. Although workers still use their hands, their work is less physically tiring, but they also have to think and take important decisions while doing a task. As an expert in economy said : « The future belongs to people who use brains instead of their muscles ». It’s estimated that tomorrow’s young qualified worker can expect to change careers six times during his/her life time. If a worker learns a job today, within ten years or less, this job will probably disappear. The best way for people to prepare for these changes is through continuous training and education while they are looking for a job or in their place of work..

American Customs.
America is well-known for its equality, liberty, fraternity. Everyone is very friendly and informal. Children often call their parents by their first names and at work; subordinates do not normally use "Mister" when addressing their supervisors. To those visitors who come from a more rigid and stratified society, such casualness can be confusing, leading to terrible blunders . Conversely, many worldly, sophisticated Americans appear mortified because they feel America is not "civilized," with a capital "C." However, we know of terribly embarrassing incidents from mistakes which only an innocent foreigner would have made.
• Public display affection between the sexes are very common, unlike perhaps where you have come from.. Many couples also live together without being married-and may never marry. But you must realize their bond is probably as strong as the bond of marriage. So don't think one of them is available for a "date.",
• America is a notoriously "open" society, and to most foreigners Americans often appear exceptionally and "instantly" friendly. But sometimes such openness can lead to serious misunderstanding , especially between men and women. A casual invitation to have drinks and/or dinner does not mean that your American host also wants to become "intimate" with you afterwards. So be careful not to read too much into a friendly invitation .

A
healthy dose of laughter
By Steve Coogier
I read that a child laughs 400 times a day on the average, while an adult laughs only 15 times each day. Which is puzzling since laughter feels so good and is so good for us! You may know the benefits of laughter on the mind and spirit, but are you aware of how much a good laugh can help you physically? Norman Cousins used to say that laughter is so beneficial for your body that it is like “inner jogging”.
Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic Health Letter, March 1993) reports that laughter aids breathing by disrupting your normal respiration pattern and increasing your breathing rate. It can even help clear mucus from your lungs. Laughter is also good for your heart. It increases circulation and improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout your body.
A good laugh helps your immune system fight off colds, flu and sinus problems by increasing the concentration of immunoglobulin A in your saliva. And it may help control pain by raising the levels of certain brain chemicals (endorphins).
Furthermore, it is a natural stress reliever. Have you ever laughed so hard that you doubled over, feel off your chair, spit out your food or wet your pants? You cannot maintain muscle tension when you are laughing!
The good news is that you are allowed more than 15 laughs a day! Go ahead and double the dose and make it 30 times today. (You may begin to notice immediate improvement in your relationships! ) Then double it again! You are bound to feel better, you will cope with problems more effectively and people will enjoy being around you.
Laughter: it’s just good medicine!
Standard test:
A)Read the text and answer the following questions:
1-How many times does a kid laugh a day?

3-What is the relation between breathing and laughing?
4-In what way does laughter help you get rid of stress?
